Maritimes Edition

Necora, these textures! I was zooming in to see how the flowers I'm practicing with (Tany's flax, spawned in multiple colors by RedKetchup's grass, with wind motion learned from your explanations in this thread) were turning out and I instead got distracted by your leaves. How do you do this? Find the most perfect screenshot ever of a leaf on the web? Draw them? They're fantastic!

Oh wow @Kedryn they are amazing, aren't they?!?

@Necora (you can blame Netflix for this next bit), I was wondering if you had thought of including the beautiful Cherry Blossoms into your Maritimes Tree mods at all?
I was watching Anne with an E last night and I saw the beautiful Green Gabled houses (so much like yours) and found that the Cherry trees were everywhere in the PEI region, in both white & pink, the white was striking!  I do love the pink though. :)    Is just a thought. ...

BTW - I after watching it and seeing the farm and the large tall roof, and the layout etc, you really did your buildings justice, I was watching the show with your in mind.  Even made poor hubby pause it a few times to talk about the mods, and how I see them in the show. :)    Oh, and I see where you got the roads inspiration from!!

Also, some shots from the series, please keep in mind that you can't screenshot in Netflix, so these are off my phone camera :)
All content is from Netflix, I make no claims (in case Netflix sees this, hahaha)

@Kedryn Nice shot, glad you like the detail! I've not zoomed in close enough to notice yet haha. Making the textures was a mix of google image sleuthing and some gimp editing. Luckily, all of the trees I made had a few representative images on google image to use. It was a case of finding the right one then stripping off the background. The aspen (that you pictured) was a nice branch on a white back ground. So I made the white transparent, although in gimp for some reason this also makes everything slightly transparent. So I had to duplicate the image a few times and merge them on top of each other then play around with contrast and saturation to get it to show up nice and vivid in game. Not much to it really, I wish I had the patience and skill to draw them! I have thought about taking my own pictures of them though, maybe if I get a lot of time in the fall I might do that and set up the branches exactly how I want them to be. I really want to do this with the evergreens in the set because it was much harder to find good images of those... people really don't know the difference between a pine and a fir! So when you type in pine needles or branches, you mostly get firs (christmas trees). It is mighty annoying, and I have plenty of all types around here so will probably make my own next time.

@QueryEverything I've not yet seen the show, I'll have to watch it. I took a lot of inspiration from PEI, similar to around here in terms of style but a bit more farm orientated. I want to expand the Crystal Cliffs part at some point with some farm houses and more barns and things, so might look there for more inspiration. PEI is pretty much farms from one end of the island to the other, mostly farming potatoes. And it is famous for the red roads! So I had to make them! Glad you like it and see similarities in the mods and the show, it was the aim to try to bring some maritimes flavor to the game.

You didn't know? All conifers are pines! I've had better('better' being a relative term) luck finding images using the Latin names of things (also quotation marks and lots of minus symbols).

The internet: full of so much information and yet so much of it wrong.

Plant geek time (raises hand and says "pick me, pick me"):  Actually, conifers include pines, firs, redwoods and other cone bearing trees and plants; so not all conifers are pines.

@estherhb I was wondering if I should have added the /sarcasm or not; I guess I should have. ;)

I am also somewhat of a plant geek. All pines are conifers but not all conifers are pines. :P

Plant geeks all around! So is my girlfriend, which admittedly is the only reason why I know how to ID most of the trees around here and the 'all pines are conifers but not all conifers are pines' bit...

Then again, I did go and call it the 'Pine Set' even though there is only 1 pine tree in it.... but that is more for the fact that the pine pitch and turpentine chains are a central thing to the set.

For all the amazing things the internet allows, I honestly believe that this is going to be the undoing of humanity. There is just so much false information being propagated and repeated through out the internet, in all aspects of life and science, and it has given people the ability to completely surround themselves in it and, in their minds rationally, reject alternative points of view. As a scientist myself it is rather depressing and overwhelming when I read it knowing there is little I can do to change it. For all the knowledge the internet gives us access to, I think it is making a lot of people dumber, even regular people who read things online and instantly take it as fact without doing any research/checking for themselves.

I'm old now, so I remember a time when the internet was mostly just people sharing actual information; probably because you had to know how to configure your PC and lol-dialup modem to have access to it. No ads back then cos it wasn't worth it.

Now it's like a cross between the National Enquirer and that crazy guy that lived down the street from me when I was a kid who told me putting aluminum foil on the windows would protect me from government mind-reading experiments.

@QueryEverything turns out Ann with an E isn't on the Canadian netflix! How rude!

Dev Update...

You might have noticed I've been updating all mods lately. Well, I only have two more to go. 1 is done, the storage mod, I just got to wait until I'm in good internet range to upload it. The second, the Pine Set, is actually quite close. I've re-made a load of the models to give the houses especially more height. This should help them to fit in with other mods. Hopefully you will have noticed this with the Sherbrooke set, everything is bigger than it was, and I think it does look better.

Now with the Pine Set, it is so big, I have to play through a few times to make sure I didn't cock anything up. Then I'll probably put it up for a quick BETA so you can have a go and see if I missed anything.

In the mean time while I am finishing things up, I was having a test and thought hmm, you know what would look good here? Diagonal cabins...

No I did not @stiles, I also posted photos of the screenshots, and gave the credit to Netflix, you can't confuse the 2.
Also, don't post torrented or illegal links on the forum, it's bad form.

-----------

@Necora what a pain in the XXXXX after all, it was only made in Canada (a lot of eye rolling), why would they not have it on Netflix, unless it is on Pay TV channel?
Check your CBC channel, if you have one, it may be listed there?  It's odd that Netflix doesn't have it.  Weird.

It is a bit dry and there are a lot of monologues in it, but so far, 3 episodes in and I am enjoying it so far.  It was a little heavy, but it's finding it's groove :)  Certainly worthwhile watching it if you can just for the environment and panoramic shots :)  The area is lovely and they production crew has done an amazing job getting the frames, just right!! :D

Oh wow - your screenshots - mind bending ...  hahaha, love the look of the diagonal houses :D  Thank you for developing them further :D

@stiles Ann with an E is a new series, a modern re-creation of the original Anne of Green Gables.

@QueryEverything well it's actual network is on CBC (Canadian Broadcast Company ;) ) I think Netflix have international rights. Problem is, I don't have a TV. You can watch it on CBC.ca but their streaming isn't as good as Netflix... some how Netflix does some magic that allows a show to buffer even on the slowest of internet connections, and keeps playing when the internet drops out. Other streaming services are pretty much un watchable.

A couple more screenshots... Thanks to @tanypredator at WOB I have been working on some compatibility patches for New Flora and others so that they can work well together and we don't have to continue to choose between mods. There are two patches, one is for flax and will make the New Flora flax chain compatible with all other flax chains, and the other patch is specifically for the Pine Set so that all New Flora and Pine Set natural resources are present on the map. I've not tested it with Nat Div yet, but I can only assume awesomeness when I do.

Ugh, poxy tv signals!  Possibly because Netflix is all about the profit line they can afford to invest millions into development, and of course they're now nominated for a swag of different awards as the 'internet station', (oh my that caused a stink according to some tabloids, how dare they be considered for an XYZ award, it's all crap really, lol), so they just put money into content and infrastructure.  Our own ABC (not to be confused with the US ABC), is Govt funded so I doubt a lot of money gets put into streaming ...  I digress, lol ...  Pay TV politics and all that ... moving on, haha.

Re Dev updates:  Oh wow, @Necora that's really something else!  I haven't minded having to have my mods set in 1 order to have the best of both worlds (somedays you just can't have double olives on a meatball sub, you have to be picky :( ), but, now - I won't have to choose?  How brilliant :D
I've never complained about the conflicts, its part & parcel of modding, but now to know there is a new collaboration jam happening... :)

A huge call out to @tanypredator for allowing this to happen, thank you :D

Hello all,

Now the Pine Set is in a Beta test, I'm nearly done with updating all mods. I hope people are testing it out for me! I need your feedback.

The storage has a couple of new types added which I showed a while ago, a dry storage and a tool shed. Here they are for a refresher...

Now I got those sorted, I have a bit of time to do some Port Royal type stuff. I'm working on getting a bit of this finished before I go travelling, so hopefully will be able to release a little something soon although it won't be the whole set...

I can't wait, so very excited to see PR coming along, I always did love this set, and it fit perfectly in other areas of my villages and outposts as well. :)  Very happy to see the WIP shots. :)

Because I scattered my BETA notes in a couple of different comments over on WoB, I think I should compact them here, just to keep it with the original WIP thread as well.

1)  I love the work on the Pine Set, the buildings are excellent, and the little touch in the height is a nice touch.
I love the new diagonal houses, and think that they fit perfectly, and I've been enjoying building them

2)  There are a couple of little bugs, but so far no game crashers, it's just odd bits, easily fixed. :)

3)  I don't have numbers for you, I've got screenshots, but not numbers, sorry.

-----

Ok, bugs:
1)  The Colourful Pine Cabins, when you upgrade them, they become diagonal houses, no biggie (they still work), just cosmetically and town planning wise, it's a bit of a doozy, oops.

59265d146a0c2_20170524NPSbugbuildingupgradetodiagonalprogression.thumb.jpg.d7c7868fdb8f08f2daf5391d001ae429.jpg 59265d18526da_20170524NPSbugbuildingupgradetodiagonal.thumb.jpg.a4cb33886ad5d88760a9b4de39435cf4.jpg

2)  The eggs are back (or weren't they squashed previously, I can't remember - but I do remember we talked about it), the "Eggs" vs "Egg" in the code.  Again, it's not a game crasher but they can't be used in any recipes - not compatible

59265d305cbe7_2071524Screenshot1182.jpg.dcd0077440461bfbdf3fdf678d210297.jpg

3)  The spacing in the Title UI of a couple of the Pine buildings (as in screenshot)

59265d32ca09a_20170524Screenshot1208bugsquash.jpg.f32687a615e0235218d97bb9379cf917.jpg

These were 6yrs apart :)  I love how they've both filled in!!

5926752e4e338_20170525NPSApr37Screenshot1149.thumb.jpg.eb839dbc063d56346d7faa3ee912beff.jpg

And yes, I terraformed right to the edge of the map - it was over 40 tiles deep in some places!! Ugh, what a waste!!  It however caused a glitch, I couldn't figure out why I had a rogue forest on the other side of the map, and then it occurred to me, that it was an 'overflow' of some kind.  I stuck a gatherer out there and sure enough, it worked :D

59268efe438d7_20170525Screenshot1137.thumb.jpg.4cc06bd480f78cee866990ae817ff150.jpg

@Necora thank you for the beautiful attention to detail, the houses, the environment, the map - it's truly beautiful and I thoroughly enjoy having your forest as my default trees, and resources (as well as Bartender's NatDiv & Tany's New Flora).

Much love for the artwork!  Thank you!!
